The Successors

The popularity of the Liberty bell slot machine grew so fast that Charles Fey just could not satisfy customers’ needs from his little shop, not to mention the fact that the use of the gambling devices of any kind was forbidden in California at the beginning of 20th century. But the machine was so popular, that other manufacturers from all of the world just copied it and began to produce their own slot machines.

In 1907 in Chicago manufacturer Herbert Mills began producing another slot machine – the Operator Bell, which had a very small difference from the Liberty bell.

Operator Bell Facts:

  • Operator bell had symbols such as bar and fruits: plum, cherry, instead of the Liberty bell’s card symbols. That is why later people in Britain began to call slots fruit machines.
  • More than 30 thousands Operator bells were produced.
  • The first slot machines were made completely of iron and because of that they were too heavy and expensive. That is why in 1915 Herbert Mills began to produce wooden Operator bells slot machines.
  • In 1930s Novelty Co., Herbert Mill’s company, made many changes in Operator bell slot machine, and in the whole industry. Such as, for example, making the machine more silent. After that people began to call that model the “silent bell”.
  • One of the main Novelty Co.’s innovations was a double jackpot, to assure players that they can win jackpot again, even if someone has won on the same slot machine just a moment before.
  • Novelty Co. produced Operator bells in different designs: a Lion Head and a War Eagle in 1931 and a Castle Front in 1933.
